Silencing Your Ride

Muffler, also known as silencer, is a device used to minimize the noise that is emitted by the vehicle while allowing fluid such as gasoline to flow through it. The emission escapes from the exhaust valve at high pressure and strikes the ear with disagreeable force unless it is silenced. Most mufflers use passive silencing method which creates a remarkable sound for vehicles. There are two types of passive mufflers, namely the dissipative and the reactive.

Reactive mufflers reflect acoustic sound waves at locations where a duct contracts, expands or branches. Often, an amalgamation of reactive elements such as expansion chambers, resonators and flow reversals is used. A reactive muffler is built to provide better low-frequency attenuation than a dissipative muffler of similar size.

Dissipative mufflers, on the other hand, consist of absorptive components that soften the acoustic energy into heat. The baffles and linings can be flat, contoured from layers of various materials. Unlike reactive mufflers, dissipative mufflers have higher attenuation and lower drop.

Mufflers can be designed using a variety of materials. The most reliable muffler is usually made of stainless steel. Although every muffler includes an all-stainless shell, end caps and even weld beads, you still have different choices depending on your needs.
